Loss of Confidence Over jumps?

Tuesday Jun 1, 2010

Hi all, Have a question for anyone that has had the same problem as me or has overcome it in recent years or months…. I have rode horses or ponies since i was about 8 years old and had my own pony for years and we done pony club activities and everything, that was great and i felt i was a great rider…. Then i took a break of nearly 6 years could be a bit more as i just stepped out of the whole horse game for a while. So just last year i went and bought an amazing cob he is a huge confidence giver and the friendliest horse you could meet. when i first got him i used to just walk and get to know him nothing major for the first 6 months of owning him i never jumped him as i have this huge fear all of a sudden something that i never had… Eventually i got over this by starting small and working my way up, just yesterday i jumped an 80cm spread, i know its a small fence but i feel great that ihave managed to get this far and hopr to get higher… So just today my yard owner offered to bring me to a cross country course not so far from our yard well i need not tell you guys my nerve went completely when i got out there i ended up not jumping one obstacle, and the fences arnt all that big at all on the course… i cried i was so frustrated with myself as my horse had done hunter trials and everything before i bought him so he is well able.. i am 22 years of age and married and my husband helps me a lot with all my horsey conquests…so my question is has anyone else experienced this overwhelming fear of jumping?? Do you think im rushing myself to much to soon?? Any helpful advice welcome no rude comments please… And also my yard owner says that i just need to get out and do it and i hate people telling me what to do when im not ready PS: my yard owner rides and trains racehorses… Any helpful advice much appreciated… Thank you in advance….

Hello,
I was afraid of jumping – 2ft seemed massive to me and it was about the highest I would go – I remember pulling a pony out of a 2ft6 fence as I was petrified.
I then got my own pony – who isn’t all that experienced jumping but is willing to try anything (he takes off from anywhere and everywhere!). It has taken me 12 months of getting used to him, but now we jump 3ft with confidence, and I did a cross country competition on him but I was really nervous. However, because I trusted him, we got round and came 4th.
So really, what I am saying is I think it just takes time – you can’t push yourself until you’re ready – I just clicked one day and thought to myself, me and fly are both capable and I have gradually built up my confidence.
I think all you need to do is work on gaining more trust in your pony/horse and gaining your confidence again.
Good luck for the future – you will get there :)

A club name?

Sunday May 23, 2010

I’m playing a horse game(www.howrse.com) and I’ve started a club that rescues the horses/ponies going to safe haven or are going to be deleted.Anyone have a good name for a club like that.So far we have the following:

Redwood Horse Rescue
Black Beauty’s Horse Rescue
Heritage’s Horse Rescue Team
True Heart Rescue Team
I’d like it if the name ended with horse rescue or rescue team.Other names will be accepted also, if they are close to what I’m looking for.

Redwood.

If it’s gonna be a haven, I think it’d be nice to have a name that describes a place.

ex. Bubbling Brook, Riverbroe, Sun Glen, etc.

Good luck,
jaxx

What size horse or pony would suit me?

Sunday May 23, 2010

I’m not planning to get a pony or horse for a while.

I’m 144cm- 45 something kilo=I’m 23years old. Yes short stuff, but who care? I live in a world of giants, everything designed for tall people.

1. I used to ride regular before i rode a horse that was totally unsuitable to my ridding level.

2. I quit ridding for quite a few year but never lost my love.

3. Earlier this year I got back into it at an old stable i used to ride at-Lovely old mare called Bess and other mare called Alice. Lol because i haven’t ridden for ages, Alice stumbled and I i fell off alice jumping, my muscle where not used to ridding! Both where about 14.2hh high Welsh Cobs, I felt they where both a good size for me, not too small and not too big. Lol still fit on a pony? I rode another one called Pete who was 15.2hh Standardbred,, however i didn’t feel we clicked, I found his gaits awkward and felt he was too big. I took him on trail ride though. Keep feeling like i was going to get knocked off by the trees.

Number 4; Walk, Trot and Canter, not a problem. Easily down pat. However i’m nevous about jumping at a canter, however i have done it before on a cheeky nature but sweet 12hh pony marcus.

Number 5; I’ve ridding thoroughbred, appaloosas, quarter horses, riding ponies, Welsh Ponies, and Welsh Cobs. I prefer one that 2nd pony nature, not total beginners.

I do occassional buy the horse deals magazine and look through it. Lol i see some really weird add, 4year old just broken in and great for beginner? Hmm 4year old would be too young for a beginner, very green horse

However I felt that bess clicked immediately-Bess is known for being stubburn, however she moved beutifully for me.
She looked like one of my 1st horses i rode called cosmo-however cosmo was much more of a handful and yes she 1st horse i ever rode, Cosmo she spook, bolt! The 1st jump i ever took was at a Gallop-as she bolted as we turned the corner and at the time I could only walk and trot, i totally missed the canter! Bess despite the similar looks, Bess was alot easier to handle, but still stubburn, she went along willinging and very forward-Bess is NOT known for her forwardness. Funny enough when we went to the jumping area, i felt Bess willingless to go forward wane, and felt her gait was odd, from somewheere in between the end of the morning lesson, and after lunch Bess had gone lame-So i called the instructor twice and said, Bess gaits weird? Remember this is the 1st time i ridden a horse in like 3 or 4years, and 1st time i’ve ever ridden this mare.

I was also a stable hand at the time and manage to identify one of the agistees horses had a twisted shoe on one of the hind feet during a feed run!

However as i’ve only completely grade 6pony club, What would i be classifed as now? I haven’t done shows or gymkanas since pony club

I want a confidence builder, , however i prefer one that didn’t spook or rear or Head toss, However naughty odd buckers doesn’t faze me
I’m use to naughty ponies-Nearly every horse i ridden has bucked on me. I know how to handle these crazy ones.

i do plan to get one in the near future when i CAN afford it. But don’t work at the moment,

Breed isn’t fussy, like mainly pleasure ridding, maybe occassional jumps and games and trail ridding, prefer Cobby type build for my weight.

What do you think would be a good size horse/pony for me?
Note; Not into jumping HUGE heights.
I Don’t plan to show.
I am looking at around 9year or older. I have people i know of that purchased in the past without vet checking with consiquences-however i’ve lost contact with them now.

Problem is with the school ponies/horses
1. Too hot,
2. Too stubburn-Pete was good but he was bit too stubburn, but he defiantly fit the quiet profile, apart from one annoying behaviour-He turn in circles so you couldn’t get him moving forward, and he’ll kick at you if you gave him a tap with the crop.

3. Personality class.
4. Too spooky
5. Too big

I never seem to end up with one totally suitable for my ridding level, which doesn’t make ridding much fun-When your at the level i’m at. I do love ridding, Marcus was probably the best, however he now too small and retired due to somehow poking his eye out. Bess was the second closest.

Lol on one of the trail rides we went on-I was given 17hh Appaloose gelding! As soon as i tell them my age, they presume, i’m miss tall! and i end up with the giants.
I also have NO trouble tacking up the most difficult horses.
I’m in australia.

Hi ,
I recomend you go for a cobby type ,
probably a welsh sec D sort ???
the breeds not to go for Are Standardbreds, Thourghbreds and Trotters , as they are all know for sometimes a fizzy attitude and quite stroppy ,
Look for an adevert with says ideal first pony etc . as even though you may think they will be plods not all of them are ,
About 14hh – 15hh would be best suited to you , possibly smaller,
anyhorse from abouts 9yrs onwards would be good because they will have the been there done that attitude and wil lkno what to do in sticky situations ,
When you go to see horses , make sure u see them ridden in traffic around spooky objects , and then try for yourself , you will kno when you find the right horse , like i did with my blue ^^ , and like you obvs did with Bess .

Have fun and good Luck

Horse Trivia Game, Repost ;)?

Friday May 14, 2010

It’s cloudy and freezing, so there’s no point of staying in the barn all day. All my barn chores are done and I cleaned tack and did extra chores today. And all three of my horses are spotless. So I’m going to make a trivia game :) The goal is to answer every question correct.

1. True/False: Horses always sleep standing up.
2. What are the two types of vision a horse has? Which is used more?
3. When a horse’s ears are pointing in two seperate directions, what does that usually mean?
4. When is a horse considered a horse, and not a foal?
5. True/False: A horse’s lower jaw is wider than the upper jaw.
6. How many gallons of saliva does a horse produce each day?
7. What is the average weight of a horse heart?
8. Which breed was used by Louis XIV and Napolean for their armies?
9. What is the heaviest horse breed?
10. What breed is a gaited horse, that is pony sized and from NW Spain?

I posted it before, but it was 20 questions. I’ll post the other ten if someone gets all of these right.

NO COPY CATTERS, it’s so annoying.

I have a whole list of questions, so I’ll try to do this weekly :)

Good luck!
So far..no one has a 100%. Good guesses though!

1. False
2. Monocular and binocular. They use monocular more
3. He is concentrating on (listening to) two different things)
4. This one’s kind of ambiguous. After he’s weaned, a horse is no longer a foal, however, people usually don’t call a six-month-old a horse. If you’re going by that school of thought, they go from foal to weanling to yearling. Otherwise, many people will call any horse under four a colt or filly, and stallion or mare when they reach four.
5. False
6. 8-10 gallons
7. 8 lbs.
8. Comtois
9. Brabant
10. Galiceno

I didn’t look at anyone else’s answers yet, so if mine are the same, we must both be really smart!!

what is the minimum height a pony can be for a 16 year old for mounted games?

Wednesday May 5, 2010

I’m a 16 year old girl looking for a horse in exercise,i have done everything and have taken a fond liking of mounted games. what is the minimal height pony i can use. im 7.5 stone and am 5ft2".

any ideas????

If you were in the US, you could ride any size pony. It doesn’t go by age, but by weight. The maximum weight for a small pony is 117lbs in the U.S. Pony Club Games rulebook. Check with your rulebook and see if your rules are any different.
